Statin drugs are effective and can start working in a few days. Your cholesterol may drop to 175 or lower. Having a high cholesterol reading does not mean you are in imminent danger or should worry. It normally takes years for deposits to build and women have a lot of protection from their hormones. If you are a heavy smoker you have an added risk factor but that does not mean you are in danger statins have been shown to not only prevent further plaque buildup but to help regress plaque that is there. I would lose some weight and exercise sensibly.

whats the reason you havent started this medicine? you need to start as the doctor tells you, cholestrol is all about the bad cholestrol if its super high then you need to take care of it quik before you start to have more health problems, effective ways to lower cholestrol besides the meds is a low fat/low cholestrol diet, exsercise:at least 30min a day of walking, or gym machines, eat oatmeal at least 3 times a week without the brown sugar, losing weight is the biggie..by losing weight you avoid lot of health issues in the future suck as high cholestrol, high blood pressure, diebetes, and other nasty health problems..at 173lbs and 5ft you are over weight sorry to say but just had to let you know straight out..loose at least 20lbs and you will see the difference while continueing on the meds..dont let this prolong..better late then sorry..good luck!
