Don’t See the Point in Anything. Is This Normal?

Question by : Don’t see the point in anything. Is this normal?
Hi,
I have “clinical depression” and am currently being treated. I have adopted a healthy lifestyle, tried natural supplements, and also am on prescription medication. Nothing has helped. I don’t see the point in…anything. I am a friendly, “happy” person in public as I do not like to bring others down. Logically, I realize that no one is always happy, but I find it difficult to even get out of bed. I know it is disgusting, but when I don’t leave the house for weeks, I don’t have any motivation to even shower or brush my teeth. I see no point! It’s just terrible! I quit my job because of anxiety. I live with my parents (I’m 22 – do NOT use any of their money – buy my own food, etc.) I see my father struggle everyday to go to work, yet he always goes because he says this is the point of life “you work and then you die…it’s not about being happy”

Nothing makes me happy. :/ I have no motivation. I used to be able to dream of a tropical paradise to pull me out and motivate me to get on with daily tasks, but now…nothing. You work & then you die…? Why not just get the dying out of the way? I often think that if my mother passed away, I would have no problem taking my own life. The only reason I am around is because my grandmother (mom’s mom) commit suicide so I could NEVER do that to her again. I do love her. I love people. I want to help the world. However, being in the world makes me want to die…AGH. Sorry, I have gotten help and I’m not at risk to myself currently…I just need advice….Thanks!

These are common feelings of depression. I remember having similar feelings when I was younger. Now I never, ever do. You see, you need to get out there and start living your life, not withdrawing in self-pity. Perhaps start off with some physical exercise to get fit and healthy and lift the sad mood. Perhaps join a sports club. Be determined to live this one and only life how YOU decide, and don’t waste it.

If I could use only one sentence to point you toward lasting happiness it would be this: True happiness can only be found in God, for only He can meet the deepest yearnings of our hearts. Let me explain.

You see, we aren’t on this earth by accident. God created us, and He put us here for a reason: to know Him and to enjoy His presence in our lives, both now and throughout eternity. God even created us with an empty place in our hearts—an empty place that He alone can fill. The Bible says, “He has also set eternity in the hearts of men” (Ecclesiastes 3:11).

Whenever we try to fill that empty place with anything or anyone other than God, we are bound to fail. No matter how many things we have or how successful we are, that empty place is still there. But when we come to Christ, we discover that God loves us, and He makes us part of His family. More than that, He comes to live within us by His Holy Spirit. Think of it: God wants you to be part of His family forever—beginning now.

By faith turn to God and tell Him that you know you need Him. Then open your heart and life to Christ and ask Him to fill the empty places in your life. Jesus promised, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives” (John 14:27). Turn to Christ today and discover the joy and peace He alone can give.
