What Do You Do When Your Partner Drinks and Becomes Aggressive and Does’nt Remember a Thing in the Morning?
Question by Sarah S: What do you do when your partner drinks and becomes aggressive and does’nt remember a thing in the morning?
I live with a man who drinks occassionally and becomes very verbally abusive and very aggressive and shouts and slams doors and then does’nt remember a thing in the morning and is sorry and crying all over the place, while broken things lie all over the house. I am scared if i leave him of what he is capable of doing.

Well, I would leave him. But, that’s just me. You don’t seem to care enough about yourself to do that.

Just because this man doesn’t drink constantly, does not mean he’s not an alcoholic. “Black-outs,” (not remembering parts of a drinking evening) is proof of this.
You can’t make him go to AA, a psychiatrist, detox, rehab or anywhere else, unless either he wants to, or the police are involved.
In the meantime take care of you. Go to Al-Anon, a group for the freinds and loved ones of alcoholics. You will learn that you are not alone. You can also take out some books on alcoholism, and gain knowledge on this subject. Remember that this is an illness (usually inherited). Also remember that the ill person needs to want to fix himself for it to work (other people are secondary–he needs to want to improve himself).
If things get too out of hand, be prepared. Know where you can go for safety (a friend who he doesn’t know about, a safe house/battered women’s shelter, etc.). This verbal abuse could turn into physical abuse, and you need to be prepared.
