Cognitive Behaviroal Therapy? Does It Work?

Question by B??be ?T?ee: Cognitive behaviroal therapy? Does it work?
I have somewhat of a , but its not terribly bad, i don’t have panic attacks, I just don’t do too well with conversations and such and care too much abt what people think… but I decided I don’t want to do meds, bc I searched on YA if it was best and saw lots of answers saying they just make you sleepy and some are addicting.. and I don’t want that for myself… so .. hows CBT like.. if you could give me some exercises your therapist gave you so I can see how its like..or tips on overcoming this, shyness :)

CBT is not the answer to all life’s problems, but it’s got a LOT going for it. It has been studied scientifically for many years and shown to be effective. It tends to be less expensive than other forms of therapy because 1) it’s based on manuals that specify a number of sessions, 2) it’s often group therapy, 3) it has been shown to help many people in the form of self help. Studies with people who complained of social anxiety symptoms (though not people diagnosed with social phobia, considered more severe) have actually done as well with self help as with regular therapy with office visits. Whether or not you take medicine is between you and doctor, but CBT seems like a really good way to start.

I’ll name two books shown to help according to studies cited in Handbook of Self Help Therapies: Dying of Embarrassment by Barbara Markway and A Guide to Rational Living by Albert Ellis. Another book that I have to mention because it’s the most popular self book of all time is How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie.
