How Do I Cope With Total Hearing Loss?
Question by JR: How do I cope with total hearing loss?
I have bilateral Meniere’s’s disease and have lost complete hearing in my right ear and now my left ear is rapidly decreasing after every attack. Onset of the disease was 1991, have had 5 crainies for a torn oval window, endolymphatic shunt on right ear, concluding the third surgery with a vestibular neurectomy on right ear with two endolymphatic shunts placed in my left ear. I thought I have been prepared for total hearing loss for years yet as it’s occurring I am actually having to see a psychiatrist to help me deal with the process. It’s kinda rough dealing with the myriad of things that deafness robs from your life. I am a 57 yr old male raising grandchildren. Has anyone out there found any good reading material regarding dealing with total hearing loss?

Your audiologist and/or ENT should know which materials and locally available programs to steer you toward.
You can look at asha.org and search “adult aural rehabilitation” for more info, too.
