Depressed Mother That Won’t Leave the Bed?

Question by Rae: Depressed mother that won’t leave the bed?
My mother has had depression for a few years now. I started wanted to right “battling depression” but she isn’t really battling depression. She just does nothing. She doesn’t even get out of the bed. She has been in rehab for medication addiction, and has been hospitalized after an overdose that left her in a coma for over a month.
My family and I don’t know what to do anymore? It is difficult to have compassion when she is behaving this selfishly. We have had to start a rotation of “shifts” to watch her and I am sick of seeing my Dad so sad and broken. I am frustrated and angry, but also sad. How does one continue to live like this? She doesn’t even feel like my mother. She has seen psychiatrists, councilors at a church, psychologists, but she just DOES NOT want to get better. I am not talking about going through heartache and feeling broken for a while. She has been like this for years. And if you catch her on a bad “shift” she shouts abusive things at a person, and brings up things over 20 years in the past.

How? I don’t know what else to say? Please, does anyone have any suggestions? Anything?

I don’t think you can do anything else in this matter anymore. Make sure that your mother’s behaviour doesn’t affect other members of your family. You may admit her in some nursing home on a permanent basis where professionals would look after her and you would get rid off the morbid situation at home, provided if you can afford that. I’d ask you to take care of the other members of the family rather than a lost case.

It’s really hard for someone to be in a situation like yours. It may seem hopeless but there is always hope for someone you love or family. I know an advanced treatment center that can help your mother. Its Crosby Center and they are so successful that major hospitals from across the US refer even their most difficult cases to them. I know a friend whose father was successfully treated in Crosby for depression and substance abuse.

Here is my suggestion, you need to seek professional advice. You can call Crosby and seek advice on how they can help your mother. From what I know they have professional intake staff at Crosby Center and they are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and it will only cost you a phone call. They will guide you through a brief confidential telephone assessment. They will even work with your insurance company to get you approved because Crosby accepts all major insurance so that treatment with them will only cost you little or nothing. I hope this helps.
