Betty Ford Center: Former First Lady Betty Ford Dies at 93
Betty Ford, the former First Lady and co-founder of an eponymous addiction center in California, died on Friday night at the age of 93. She was the third longest-lived first lady, only after Bess Truman and Lady Bird Johnson. The family was said to release a statemeht later Friday. No other details were immediately available.
Over 20 years ago, Ford underwent quadruple coronary bypass surgery. She underwent radical surgery for breast cancer in 1974 and operations for blood clots in August 2006 and April 2007. The widow of President Gerald Ford suffered from poor health and increasing frailty, which caused her to largely curtail her public life.

Her husband, President Ford also died at the age of 93. Gerald Ford died in December 2006, at the couple’s home in Rancho Mirage
As first lady, Betty Ford was active in social policy. In addition, she advocated for women’s health and women’s rights. Handicapped children, women’s issues and the arts were her major attention. The First Lady studied modern dance at Bennington College in Vermont. Especially, she endeavored to educate women about breast cancer which she also suffered from in 1974.

Ford was warded many honors over her life. She was awarded a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1991 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 1999
