What Are the Symptoms of Becoming Dependent on a Prescription Drugs?

Question by JB: What are the symptoms of becoming dependent on a prescription drugs?
My doctor prescribed Vidcodin after I injured my back last week. I was supposed to take one pill every 6 hours, but I took one pills a day, maybe 1.5 to 2. I am extremely scared to becoming addicted to anything because addictions run in my family.

I now worry because I have taken pills the last two days. about 2 pills a day, just at night time to sleep, although my back pain is tolerable, because they helped me fall asleep. I can see this becoming a bad thing, and i only had 30 pills to begin with. I am worried about becoming addicted. Although I am taking a really low dose, I hear it starts like this.

What should I do. Should I throw them away or give them to my fiancee to keep from me?

the fear of becoming addicted tells me that you should have nothing to worry about. as long as your INTENT for taken them is for pain, instead of, the allege pain is not the cover up for taken the pills. I am a drug and alcohol interventionist and i deal with addiction daily, with my business and my personal life- im in recovery. However, you deserve to know that there are classifications for dependency. If you are dependent on them because you have constant pain and you must take the medication, then you would be considered dependent because you “rely” on the medication to help you function during the day. There is a flip side to this, if you taking them recreationally, and then you become physically addicted then you have to take them because you will get sick, then again, you are dependent. but its based off of emotional and spiritual issues.

So, the best thing for you is to “KNOW YOUR INTENT FOR TAKING THE MEDICATION.” If you are true with yourself, and you know why you are taking them and you understand the risks of taking them, you should be okay ( trusting my gut ). So, to tie this in with your medication. You are in the infancy of developing a addiction to the meds for sleep purposes. if this happens you are going to deal with some major problems when you decide you no longer want to take them. DETOXIFICATION from meds. expect 3 – 10 days of detox. the length will depend on your age, health, length of use and amount. If you have now discovered that you have a sleep impairment from this journey then i would recommend you find an alternative way to deal with you sleeping. otherwise only use the medication for your back. because of your back. one thing stick out in my mind that you said about you back being tolerable. this tells me that you may not even need to be taking the meds for your back. You know what i mean. it sounds you need something to help you sleep. Hope this helps
