“Speak” by Laurie Halse Anderson is a great novel dealing with a teenage girl’s depression after an event that happened to her. Actually, anything by Laurie Halse Anderson is good as far as the Young Adult genre goes.

“Girl, Interrupted” by Susanna Kaysen is a memoir about her stay at a psychiatric inpatient facility during her late teens/early adulthood after a suicide attempt. It is a fantastic book.

“Crank” by Ellen Hopkins is a great book about a girl who is depressed and addicted to drugs, written in poetic form.

“Go Ask Alice” is a classic about a girl suffering from depression.

“The Perks of Being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky is a coming-of-age book about a teenage boy named Charlie going through some issues, and other various things that many teens suffer with. The ending is profound and I personally love this book.

“The Catcher in the Rye” by J.D. Salinger is a classic coming of age novel about a depressed young adult. I personally did not enjoy The Catcher in the Rye, but I think I am one of the few people out there who can say that, most everyone else I know loved it.

“The Bell Jar” by Sylvia Plath is an extremely depressing book, but if you want books about people suffering from depression, that’s the one. It’s more adult literature than young adult though, so you might not be interested.

That’s all I can think of off the top of my head. Happy reading!
