Addiction or Lack of Self Control?
Question by kanga: addiction or lack of self control?
Alcoholic’s Anonymous believes that “you are powerless over alcohol” and that if you have a drinking problem, the only way to solve it is to never drink again. It is a “medical condition” or an “Allergy” to alcohol.
Over the years this belief has become more and more popular, and as of now, it is so widely believed by society that it could almost qualify as a fact. Although there is little, if any, science to back this up.
I don’t get it. And before anyone gets mad, I am qualified to have an opinion, as someone who use to do drugs and drink all the time, went to a 6 month inpatient rehab, have not used drugs since I got out a year ago, still drink, but under complete control, and have had no problem with it since I left rehab.
I think these theories are just ridiculous. If AA works for you, great, thats fine. But personally, I think its another addiction in its self. And saying you are “powerless over alcohol” is simply a pathetic excuse for someone with no self control. There are times when I want to drink more often then I believe I should, I get annoyed for a minute with the thought of not drinking when I’m super bored, then I get the **** over it and get on with my night. Its easier to say “Oh I’m powerless” and avoid the problem than it is to FIX it.
Em- You are needed on here with that Southpark quote ASAP. I will text you now and let you know I need it LOL.
A friend of mine who I went to rahab with, wanted me to go with her to an AA meeting yesterday. I did. It was rediculous. This girl shared about a “sobriety threatening issue”– she took a sip of someones drink and was unaware until she tasted it that it had alcohol in it. And she was so worried she was going to start drinking again. Everyone was like “OHHH NOOOO!!!” Do they think alcohol is going to attack them or something? You took a sip, its not like now alcohol is going to shove itsself down your throat. Just dont drink it if you dont want to drink. That simple.
LOL Em- Thanks. So accurate. Southpark is such a F’n brilliant show. No one else can blend humor and fact like that!!!

of course it’s an addiction, these “AA” and ”NA” organizations, (created by Christians) tries to say you have a disease, just like the doctors say obesity is a disease, when the truth is, YOU had the choice to start drinking, or doing drugs, and only YOU have the choice to quit. they do this to make you feel weak, make you feel like you can’t do anything yourself and you need help from a ‘higher power’ other than yourself to overcome your problems. people need to start realizing only you can be the light for yourself, yea it may halp some people, but in the end it’s still up to you wether or not you choose to continue succumbing to your addictions

To some extent, you are perfectly right. “powerless over alcohol” is a mere phrase. If anybody has strong mind control and adhere to stop drinking, or addiction to any other vice, though for a certain period, some kind of withdrawal syndrom will be there, but the perpetual habit or habits can be thrown away. But, it all depends entirely upon your mind’s self control. Self control is the best control, as you know. Nothing is impossible as well.
