Treatments include both medication and various forms of psychotherapy and depend on the type of bipolar disorder being treated. Treatment programs may evolve over time in order to best address a person’s symptoms at any given time. Drug regimens for bipolar disorder may include a combination of the following medications: Mood stabilizers. Many medications can help stabilize swings between mania and depression. Lithium has been used for a long time to treat acute mania, but is not tolerable for about 30 percent of the people who try it because of side effects including tremors, hair loss, weight gain, and memory problems. Antidepressants. These medications are controversial when it comes to treatment of bipolar disorder. Before taking antidepressants, a person should have a detailed conversation with his or her doctor as antidepressants may be ineffective and can even trigger manic episodes. Anti-seizure, or anti-convulsant medications. These are very effective in treating the mood swings associated with rapid-cycling bipolar disorder
