Christian Alcohol Rehab Centers: Alcoholism – the Facts

Alcoholism is affecting more people than ever before. With disposable income abundantly available in comparison with recent years and more and more people looking for an escape from the stress and trouble of daily life in the 21st century, it could be said that the amount of people in America that are alcoholics is on the rise. In addition, as this number rises, the amount of people that are affected by alcohol indirectly is slowly increasing also. This article looks at some of the key facts surrounding alcoholism which are important to acknowledge.

This statement that indicates there are a significant amount of people who are affected indirectly by alcohol can be punctuated by the fact that as much as 53% of Americans claim that they know someone or are someone who has been affected by an alcohol addiction. This can be unsurprising, too, considering that 7.1% of America’s population are alcoholics, and there are many people who are believed to be susceptible to alcoholism because of their alcohol usage.

A Christian alcoholism rehab center usually has guidelines on what they define as a drinking problem, based on four fundamental factors that include how much alcohol a person can tolerate in a drinking session (tolerance can rise as alcohol is abused more frequently); whether a person can experience medical effects from drinking, or indeed a lack of drinking; whether a person receives frequent urges and cravings for alcohol; and, lastly, whether or not a person can lose control once they have consumed a drink of some description.

Other facts that have stemmed from research is that a drinking problem can be hereditary, meaning that a person is likelier to suffer from alcoholism if there is anyone in their direct family who has also endured a drinking problem in the past. As more people begin to drink, more people are going to be affected in the future, with an alarming rise of 38% in the amount of cases that one Christian alcoholism rehab center took on in a 12-month period.

These tough economic times that are dominant around the world during the recession are not being helped by the rising trend of those suffering from alcoholism. In all, America’s alcohol problem cost the US economy $ 100 billion in total for treatments as well as awareness of the consequences that an alcohol dependency can bring on a person.

Recommended guidelines of safe alcohol consumption vary, with the NIAAA (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism) that two cans of beer for men and a small glass of wine for women are a safe amount to drink on a daily basis without any harm or psychological effects which a chemical dependency in alcohol can bring.

A reassuring fact is that there are many rehabilitation clinics and schemes which are taking proactive steps to help people to overcome the difficulties that they have. One such scheme is Alcoholics Anonymous, which are believed to have 53,665 in the USA alone. Even though there is a long way to go before America’s alcohol problems are solved, some people can find solace in the fact that there are proactive steps being taken to ensure that the issue is under control.
