Crossroads Rehab Center: the Path to Success Has Many Crossroads

I’ve always had a creative bent, as far back as I can remember. As the years have gone by I’ve dabbled in this and that, always trying to satisfy my creative hunger. Then in the early 1990s I signed up for an adult education painting class, serious painting – watercolor.

I set out on my path to success with that first step, in spite of my insecurity and nervousness, education. My decision to attend a class was life changing and the first of many decisions I would be faced with on my creative journey.

The key to success is to embark on your journey by taking action and making informed decisions. For me finding a gifted teacher was key to unlocking my passion and ability. Once your eyes are opened with insightful and nurturing instruction, you’ll face other decisions, crossroads and perhaps an unplanned detour or two, but the journey should always continue if you expect to arrive.

Before you begin your excursion, though, you might want to ask yourself some probing questions so you can map your course and set your compass. Here are a few questions that have been helpful to me in charting my course to success.

1. Do you want your passion to be a hobby or professional pursuit?
2. How do you propose to get there?

Finally, ask yourself this most important question.

3. Do I possess the personal fortitude to continue on toward my goal in the face of opposition?

You see, I have found the path to success is not a direct flight and may include stopovers in various places along the way. Realize that each unplanned detour and stopover can provide a valuable education if you’re paying attention.

When I first began showing my artwork I headed off to that first show with excitement and anticipation certain that I would be met with accolades and validation.

The reality of that day was much different. While I wasn’t thrown out, I wasn’t rewarded the way I’d hoped. I went home with my head hanging low, feeling discouraged and disillusioned. This would become the first of many crossroads on my journey toward artistic “success.” Right then I considered quitting. I am immensely glad I did not.

While I have not yet arrived at this thing called “success,” I am determined to show up everyday, armed with flexibility and an open mind. All these things will go a long way toward making you ready for that lucky break you’ve worked toward in order to be an “overnight” success!

You’re at a crossroads right now reading this. Which path will you choose?

I’m Lorraine Mulligan a/k/a Rainey (Dewey) Mulligan, an artist, mother and grandmother living in Upstate New York. I’ve been painting and drawing since I was very young, but became more serious about it in 1989 when I took an “adult ed” course at our local high school. That class provided a foundation of information and motivation that I continue to draw on to this day. Painting and drawing feed my spirit and bring peace into an otherwise chaotic world.
