Do You Think Bipolar Disorder Is Caused by a Nutritional Deficiency That Can Be Completely Corrected by Diet?

Question by jiggityhizzy: Do you think bipolar disorder is caused by a nutritional deficiency that can be completely corrected by diet?
I have had bipolar disorder 1 for seven years now. Right now I’m on six different psychiatric medications to treat it. I hate being a slave to prescription medicine. I have heard that bipolar is a deficiency of B vitamins. Do you think it’s possible to treat the symptoms with proper diet, vitamin supplementation, and exercise?

I’m afraid that I don’t know of any evidence to support your hope that this illness can be cured by a diet and supplements.

I understand that you don’t like having to take all this medicine – I expect it produces some side effects as well. Apart from asking your doctor to review your medication on a regular basis to see whether it is all still necessary or whether a better alternative has become available I don’t think there is any other course of action open to you.

There are many medical conditions still which cannot be cured and which require a lot of medication to control them, for example epilepsy, schizophrenia, diabetes, HIV, to name just a fraction of them. Obviously it would be wonderful if some or all of these could be treated by a better diet and some natural herbs or vitamins but the reality is they cannot, and stopping the medication would only make things worse. I think at this time you should keep taking your medication and hope that advances in science in the future will make life easier for you.

Nope. I have Bipolar 1 w/ psychosis and I have always eaten a very healthy diet and taken vitamin supplements…. Eating a healthy diet can, in some ways, help with some of the symptoms but it has no real effect on the Bipolar.
