Electrick Shock?

Question by sanko: electrick shock?
According to a review of 61 studies of patients
suffering from severely debilitating depression, a
large majority of the patients reported that missing a
night’s sleep immediately lifted their depression. Yet
sleep-deprivation is not used to treat depression even
though the conventional treatments, which use drugs
and electric shocks, often have serious side effects

Look at this line
“Yet sleep-deprivation is not used to treat depression….”

sleep-deprivation means no sleep………..so do they mean if a person is not allowed to sleep then there will be no depression ?

i don’t understand these lines below .
“Yet
sleep-deprivation is not used to treat depression even
though the conventional treatments, which use drugs
and electric shocks, often have serious side effects”

this article is saying that losing a night of sleep can help depression, electric shock can help depression, and drugs can reduce depression. however, not just any drugs–it’s referring to antidepressants.

i’ve never heard that missing sleep can help treat depression. most people who are depressed have some kind of sleep disturbance–either insomnia, or lack of sleep; or hypersomnia, sleeping too much (which is far more common). that’s an interesting article and i’ll have to see if i can find anything else on it.

basically, electric shock can cause gaps in memory or just generally be painful; drugs are very hard to adjust to and often cause weight gain or worsen depression, and sleep loss may or may not work.
