“Exposure Therapy” Doesn’t Work for Me? I Have a Lot of Social Anxiety/?
Question by nickname: “Exposure Therapy” doesn’t work for me? I have a lot of Social Anxiety/?
So basically, I have either Social Anxiety, generalized anxiety or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder which I believe to stem from middle school. I guess I haven’t come to a conclusion as I’m self-diagnosing, but… with that, you know how a lot of people say the best way to get past anxiety is to just “expose” yourself to the situations that you fear the most? The thing with me is that I don’t necessarily “fear” situations before they happen. The thing with me is that I get severely sick in certain situations — doing a performance or skit in front of a class, being in a big crowd, talking to a stranger… if you were to ask me to do any of these things, I’d be completely open to it. In fact, I’d probably feel that I should due to my problem — to “expose” myself to them. Only, it’s once I get into those situations where I begin to get sick with anxiety, nervousness, faintness, de-realization, inability to think… so the whole “Exposure Therapy” technique doesn’t work for me. I’m also haunted by “embarrassing” memories, too, hence the “PTSD.” They’re highly intrusive, and I cringe whenever I get them — at least 20 something times a day. So the whole exposure thing just simply isn’t working for me. So I don’t know what to try? Is therapy the only option for me…? I’m 17 and a guy, if it matters.
