How Do Doctors Know if You Need Antidepressants?

Question by b r i b r i :]: How do doctors know if you need antidepressants?
I’ve been seeing a therapist and I’m fairly sure that I have depression.
He’s technically only a “family and marriage counselor” and I have no idea what degrees he has. (I’m sure my mom does.)

I think medication might be of help to me, but I’m not sure.
How do doctors know if you need it or not?
&Should I say something to my therapist?

You should definitely talk to your therapist about your depression.
But in my opinion when it comes to medication, especially psychiatric meds, you should consider seeing a Clinical Psychologist or as a last resort, a Psychiatrist. They are experienced and will know if you need to take anything. regualr G.P’s are not always a good choice.

It has a lot to do on what your therapist believes in. There are therapists who believe anything can be changed if you just change your attitude. There are others who may rely heavily on medication. It’s all about professional opinions, and there really isn’t a solid way to figure it out.

You should ask your therapist about trying out medication and to see if after a month or so you experience any improvements in your mood.
