According to the May Clinic, “the bones, ligaments and tendons that make up the shoulder joint are encased in a capsule of connective tissue. Frozen shoulder occurs when this capsule thickens and tightens around the shoulder joint, restricting its movement.”

There are several risk factors for frozen shoulder. Has you mother recently had her arm in a sling for any reason? Did she have a rotator cuff injury? Is she recovering from a stroke or surgery. An arm that has been immobilized for a period of time is more at risk.

You don’t indicate whether or not your mother has diabetes which may indicate one possible cause -an autoimmune problem.

Frozen shoulder is also a symptom of other conditions such as overactive and underactive thyroid, cardiovascular disease, tuberculosis and of course Parkinson’s disease.

While it isn’t going to “spread” the condition needs to be treated. Treatment cannot begin until the cause is determined. There will be physical exam, probably X-rays and possibly an MRI.

Because daily life demands that of motion, treatment is necessary. She can’t just ride this out. There are both NSAIDS and corticosteroids that can be given or injected.

She will also need physical therapy and possibly medical massage therapy. Surgery is a last resort.

Best wishes to her
