According to TMZ, the 44-year-old Starr was found dead in a Salt Lake City, Utah, home on Tuesday afternoon. There was no immediate word on Starr’s cause of death. In 2009, Mike Starr appeared on the VH1 reality show “Celebrity Rehab,” where he received treatment for an addiction to heroin. Starr also appeared on the “Celebrity Rehab” spinoff show, “Sober House.” On both shows, Starr was treated by Dr. Drew Pinsky. Shortly after news of Starr’s death broke, Pinsky Tweeted that it was “Devastating to hear of Mike Starr succumbing to his illness. So very sad. Our prayers are with his family.” The musician’s struggles with addiction may not have ended in 2009: in February of 2011, less than a month before his death, Starr was arrested by Utah police and charged with felony possession of a controlled substance. Mike Starr was an original member of Alice in Chains, which rose to prominence as part of the Seattle “grunge scene” in the early 1990s. Starr left the band in 1993 during Alice in Chains’ tour behind their second album, “Dirt,” though he later claimed he’d been “fired due to his drug addiction.” After Starr left Alice in Chains, drug issues continued to dog the band, ultimately resulting in the 2002 overdose death of lead singer Layne Staley.
