Julea Ward Was Dismissed From a Counseling Program After She Refused to Work With a Gay Student. Thoughts?
Question by jason m: Julea Ward was dismissed from a counseling program after she refused to work with a gay student. Thoughts?
Note that her actions were against the professional code of ethics and she refused to work with the college to resolve the issue.
Julea Ward was dismissed from a counseling program at Eastern Michigan University in 2009 after she refused to counsel a gay student based on her Christian religious beliefs and, according to school officials, declined to work with the university to resolve the issue.
Michigan’s House of Representatives passed a bill June 12, 2012 that would prohibit the state’s public universities from taking such action in the future. The bill (HB 5040) is being called the “Julea Ward freedom of conscience act” in honor of Ward. It would forbid public colleges and universities from discriminating against or disciplining students participating in counseling, social work and psychology programs “because the student refuses to counsel or serve a client as to goals, outcomes, or behaviors that conflict with a sincerely held religious belief of the student, if the student refers the client to a counselor who will provide the counseling or services.”
An identical bill, SB 518 is being considered in the Michigan Senate. If the bill is passed in the Senate, the Julea Ward freedom of conscience act will likely become law.

So theres the fact that she is a joke of a person, and certainly not qualified as a human to do such a job, but also that she refused to do her job. It was right of them to fire her. I have sincerely held beliefs myself. Does that mean I can define my career field by them? Referring someone to another counselor for this reason is not appropriate. People who need help do not need to be shuffled around, and our support systems do not need to be weekend by extra joints. It may be better for a patient in that the patient will not get appropriate understanding from a bigot, but that is why people like this shouldn’t be licensed to do such jobs. She can go work in a church if that is what is important to her.

Another shining example of the religious whackjobs trying to legislate being gay back into the closet. The only difference I can see between the fruit cakes now and the Nazi’s in 1930’s Germany is in Germany they had a guy with a goofy mustache leading the way. Now these clowns just want to fly below the radar and hide.
The real question everyone should be asking is “After all the gays are bashed into oblivion, who is next?” because you know these people aren’t going to stop.
