Pinching of Back Skin During Physical Therapy?
by isafmedia
Question by Dr. Kim: Pinching of back skin during physical therapy?
I have sciatica, and am going to physical therapy for it. The therapist says my problem is due to really tight muscles up and down my back. During today’s session, after I told him my pain wasn’t really improving, he did this thing where he pinched my back skin really hard, and shook it between his fingers. Worst pain ever. Is this a real technique or is he some kind of jerk?

Maybe not a jerk, but probably trying some type of “myofacial technique”…either way, sounds like he’s not going to help you.
I’d suggest a PT who is trained Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy. This is the most evidence based method of assessment and treatment…especially for sciatica. I’d recommend going to www.mckenziemdt.org
