Rehabilitation is now a very common and often asked for treatment. Lately its importance has been realized in all walks of life. With the increasing amount of sports being played every day worldwide there has been intense competition among players to outperform each other. This has also led to increase in sports related injuries. To remain competitive, more and more players are actively seeking programs.

Definition:

Sports rehabilitation can be defined as a program that includes all aspects of physical fitness to regain complete ‘sports specific’ mobility. This would encompass all activities starting from injury prevention to complete healing and maintenance of physical fitness pertaining to particular sports.

Any sports rehabilitation program starts with identifying the injury and then administering pain relieving treatment. This is to alleviate the player from trauma caused by agonizing pain. Then the cause of injury is identified and suitable treatment is provided. Once the injury has healed, then the player is advised physical therapy to regain original physical fitness.

A program for rehabilitation is not expressively required before sustaining injury. The actual need of rehab arises only when some injury is sustained during the sporting action. The primary concern for any sports instructor is to attend and provide relief from pain inflicted by the injury. This requires an expert experienced person to take care of, as any wrong treatment administered may aggravate the injury and instigate more harm both in terms of physical and mental loss.

Seeing the importance and rising demand for a well versed and experienced rehabilitator, there are many courses available providing required training and expertise to individuals seeking sports rehabilitation as their career path.

Lately, there is a trend among leading players or their sponsors taking up insurance against any injuries to prevent any financial loss caused by injuries sustained in active sports. This has added to the growing importance and demand of talented workforce in the field of sports rehabilitation. All these causes together have made this as a gratifying career option.

Courses for careers in sports rehabilitation:

A sports rehabilitator, commonly known as physical instructor or physiotherapist, is a person who has done certain certified course in the field of sports rehabilitation. There are many institutions both private and government or federal which provide certified courses for fitness trainers. These are generally for duration of 1 year for diploma. There are reputed sports gears manufacturing brands also (such as Adidas and Nike) which provide short term professional courses for physical instructors.

Internationally also there are approved bodies by various governments which provide sports education and coaching such as Sports Authority of India (SAI) in India, BASRaT (British Association of Sports Rehabilitators and Trainers) in UK, BFY (better fitness for you) India and many more.

For anyone aspiring to start make a career in sports rehabilitation, he has two options. On a broad scale there are two specializations to opt from. One can either choose to work as general instructor for common public in places such as gyms or training centers or can opt to work in sports rehabilitation center. But, in latter case, it would require more expertise and knowledge specific to kind of sports the athlete is associated with. Another option is to work as physiotherapist with hospitals and help the patients gain back minimum or original mobility.

Seeing the rise of so many institutes imparting professional education, there is certainly growing to be abundant supply of trained workforce in the sports rehabilitation market. With no dearth in workforce and rising demand, sports rehabilitation provides for challenging and rewarding opportunities to all the enthusiasts.
