Stress and Depression: Understanding the Difference Between Stress and Depression

The difference between stress and depression has been blurring especially at this present day where statistics have been showing increasing rates of people suffering from depression, and a lot of people have been reporting that they feel very much stressed about a lot of things.

Aside from this, the diminishing difference is attributed to the fact that people who experience too much stress tend to be depressed later; and the same as people who are undergoing depression are also being stressed.

Stress and Depression: Comparison

The definition of these words may already point out the difference between the two but let us compare them side by side with each other.

Stress refers to the response of the body when a stimulus tends to threaten the disruption of our individual equilibrium while depression is referred to as a condition where one experiences worthlessness or decreased self esteem and self value.Another difference between stress and depression is that, the former is a reaction of the body with a person, thing or situation that appears as threat to their well being, while the latter is not a reaction but a state of mind and being.Also, the stimulus that causes stress appears first before the body causes the sudden surge in hormones causing the manifestations of stressful conditions. While, depression begins with a biochemical imbalance in neurotransmitters and hormones in the brain that leads to the different characteristics seen in a depressed individual.The symptoms also cause the difference. In stress, the person tends to have hyperactivity and hyper responsiveness as seen by increasing blood pressure, racing pulse rate and respirations. Depression, on the other hand, can initially be observed by decreased activity and appetite, isolation, lack of speech and easy fatigability.A big difference between depression and stress is that the former has a purpose which is to alert the individual about physical, emotional or social threats. Depression does not have a purpose in the body at all, and is even detrimental to social relationships and functions.Another difference is consequences. Stress is more of a physical response and its effects are mostly limited to the individual, while depression is more of an emotional response whose effects are not only affecting the person but as well as the people around the individual.

Management

Even though both of them can benefit from stress relief measures, the interventions being employed in managing both problems may be different. There is a treatment difference between stress and depression. Stress can be managed by resting and doing relaxation techniques while depression needs counseling and some even require pharmacologic regimen.

The management of these problems does not end with acquiring a knowledge about the difference between stress and depression, performing active participation, seeking support from other people, and compliance to management is much more valued not just in one but for both.
