Alcohol and drug rehab programs and substance abuse treatment centers have a primary goal; to prevent a client from leaving rehab against medical advice. There is very good reason for this concern, because if they can’t keep a client in treatment, then they can’t help them begin the process of addiction recovery. Many leading alcohol and substance abuse treatment centers now have services that help treat underlying issues, called comorbidities, and do not just focus solely on addiction recovery. Why? These underlying issues can become obstacles to addiction recovery. For example, it is very difficult for a client to sit through an individual, group or 12-step meeting if he or she is experiencing frequent anxiety attacks.
