What Are the Symptoms of a Mental Breakdown?

Question by His Wife For Life: What Are The Symptoms Of A Mental Breakdown?
Last year in May I was told I may never have children due to PCOS. It has gone untreated because I don’t have medical insurance. Well in that year I let my family know my diagnosis. Everyone seemed to brush it off as me being dramatic and my mom thinks I’m lying.

I also got into a relationship with a guy and I told him I might not be able to have kids and he made fun of me for it.

The only thing I want to do with my life is have kids and everyone in my family (Excpet my dad) is calling me crazy. I have two sisters (one is older the other yougner) and they both have kids. My older sister keeps telling me that I shouldn’t want kids and then she’ll turn around and say how grateful she is for hers. My younger sister is pregnant with her second child and she keeps saying rude things like, “its easy to get pregnant if you’re a woman”.

My boyfriend says I’m crazy because I’ve been talking about kids since the day I met him. We’ve been together for 7 months.

Today I completely lost it (sobbing, screaming, and etc.) and almost went to the hospital to be put on a 5150 hold. I can’t take my life anymore and people telling me I’m wrong for wanting kids. I’m 22 years old, I go to school, and I have a job.

I’m pretty sure I need therapy and my dad has agreed to pay for it so I might start tomorrow. I feel like I’m losing my mind. Am I having a mental breakdown? I’ve had depression in the past.

Well, the symptoms of a mental breakdown are all different, but basically you feel like you cannot function and get anything done for a variety of reasons. I think you should definitely seek therapy. You should also provide your lab tests showing that you have cysts and the opinion that you cannot have children. It would be hard for people to argue with facts in black and white. From what you said, it sounds like people do not that you have the problems and that could only mean that you TOLD them but did not SHOW them any proof. If you have shown them proof, their actions are insensitive and I would seek comfort elsewhere. Your father appears willing to provide comfort.
I would also suggest that you consider alternative means of having children, such as adoption. My wife and I could not have children and we adopted four children.
