What Type of Clothing Should I Wear After Hip Replacement Surgery?

Question by Joyce A: What type of clothing should I wear after hip replacement surgery?
I am scheduled for a total hip Replacement surgery and will be going into a nursing home immediately afterwards. I think they call it a “skilled nursing facility.” I am not sure how long I’ll be there;the nurse says it depends on the patient, so I’m thinking about two weeks.

I assume I’ll be having some physical therapy. My insurance pays for a semi-private room. I don’t know what type of clothing I’ll need for the rehab center. I usually wear elastic waist, knit pajama pants which could be worn with a tee shirt for lounge wear. One of the facilities said to wear pajama pants because of the physical therapy involved. The other said I’d be bandaged and sore and should wear those loose-fitting muu-muu or lounge dress type-garments. They pull over the head or snap/zip in front and are sometimes called “patio dresses.”

I will need to purchase new garments either way. Could someone who has undergone a hip replacement and stayed in a rehab facility afterwards please advise me? I’ll need to start purchasing some things very soon. I’m thinking I should buy both, but I don’t usually wear those muu-muu things. Thanks in advance.
Ladies, you’ve given me some wonderful advice. But I won’t be wearing conventional sweat pants – I live in Florida, and right now I’m running the AC. I’ll look for knit pants that might be more cool and comfy. I just ordered some cotton knit pajama pants and tees online. I’ll probably be able to use those in rehab. I may also look for some yoga pants.

You need to get clothes that are loose fitting( not sloppy but not too restricting) and easy to get on and off. Elastic waist are the best.Make sure pants legs are the proper length so you don’t trip.I wouldn’t recommend and type of dress. They would get in the way when you are being assisstes by the physiotherapist.

Best of luck with your operation. You will do just fine.

I’ve had both hips replaced in separate surgeries, one during warm weather. I didn’t go to a rehab center either time but during my 4-day hospital stay I wore knit shorts and tee shirts (as soon as they took my IV out) when it was warm and knit sweat pants and tees when it wasn’t so warm. Get sweat pants that don’t have a knit cuff at the ankle. They should work fine.
No, you don’t want anything tight around the incision so get loose-fitting pants.

Otherwise you can wear regular clothes that are not tight (and that don’t involve putting on panty hose). =)

I wouldn’t know a patio dress if I tripped over it.
